Since 2005, thousands of customers have trusted Unraid to securely store large amounts of data, back up photos and videos, run virtual machines, play games and movies from their server, and much more. The possibilities are endless.
Unraid started in 2005 as a personal quest to improve digital media storage.
Our founder, Tom, wanted a reliable way to store and back up his sizable DVD collection—far more than could fit on a single external hard drive.
His solution was Unraid OS: a software that makes it possible to link multiple storage devices together—even if they’re different sizes, types, or from different brands.
More than twenty years in, our mission is the same: help you use the hardware you already own to build the server you actually want.
Unraid remains the most flexible, easy-to-use NAS OS available, giving media enthusiasts, gamers, developers, and serious data users complete control over their storage, applications, and desktops without locking them into rigid systems.
Unraid is, at its core, a family-built product. Founder Tom created the company in 2005 with a vision for storage freedom and long-term independence. In 2019, his daughter Tiffany stepped in as CEO to help lead the next phase of growth. Today, Tom’s son and son-in-law also work alongside the team, continuing the hands-on, founder-led culture that has shaped Unraid from the beginning.

What is an Unraid?
A RAID array creates a single storage volume out of multiple hard drives to provide network attached storage—but there’s a catch: all the drives have to be the same. And you can’t add more without starting over.
An “Unraid” is the opposite. With Unraid OS, you can mix and match drives, securely store and share data, and manage VMs and Docker applications—all from one powerful, web-based interface.
